Frequently Asked Questions

What's the deal with this 'reincarnate' business?

No one really knows. It's been happening for a long, long time - centuries, almost a millennium now - but the best anyone can offer is 'magic.' At some point in the distant past, someone cast a spell that started granting living people the abilities of heroes of legend. As an unintended consequence, the rest of the heroes came along too - memories, personality, even a will and a mental 'voice' - as well as villains from the same stories. Over the years, stories that hadn't been written yet started to be pulled in too; it's possible for a reincarnate to appear long before their tale is told in print or on celluloid.

Basically, reincarnates are fictional people inside a living 'real world' person's head. Some manifest as dreams before they become a mental 'voice.' Others spring forth wholly-formed, like Athena from Zeus's skull. At that point, 'real' person and fictional reincarnate have to coexist. The real person might start manifesting the reincarnate's powers, if they have any, or might pick up some of their main skills.

The Agency has ways of tracking new reincarnate arrivals, and not long after the character appears someone will show up to speak to them. These people are 'Caretakers' and are a cross between a counselor and a caseworker. Their job is to pass along information and to handle any questions and (reincarnate-related) problems a character might have.

How much influence do the reincarnates wield on their hosts?

Well, it varies. Some people are naturally made of sterner stuff than others, and some reincarnates are more demanding. Think of it as having a roommate that won't leave you alone - you can't escape and you always know what they're thinking. There's a give-and-take, and while everyone is going to be influenced in some way, the 'how' and 'how much' is really up to the player. Voldemort's going to be harder to live with than, say, Charles Xavier. Xavier might respect his host's personal beliefs and boundaries, whereas Voldemort is much more domineering and heartless.

Eventually, many hosts and reincarnates learn to get along. Some are friendly, while others call a truce because it's more expedient. To work for the Agency, a character must be on working terms with their reincarnate. If there are still power struggles going on, any employment application will be rejected. Some never reach more than an uneasy truce, and in the case of particularly large differences between a reincarnate and a host's personality, they might never learn to get along.

Can the reincarnate completely take over, even if my character wouldn't allow it?

Sometimes, yes. It's not something that frequently occurs, but if the host quits fighting or is in a weakened position (injured, asleep, unconscious) and the reincarnate is the sort of person who'd force their way into control, it's certainly possible.

Can there be multiple versions of a character at once? For example, the movie version of Magneto and the regular comics version, plus Age of Apocalypse and Ultimate and...

In the world? There can be more than one version at once. However, in terms of game play, there can only be one played version of a character at a time. Once someone apps a Magneto, there can be no other Magnetos until the first dies or is dropped.

Can I app a reincarnate as the opposite sex?

Yes. To use the above example, Magneto could be in a female host. He could be paired with a female South Korean teenager, in fact. The reincarnate in no way dictates the race, ethnicity, sex, or national origin of the host.

If the reincarnate's a villain, must the host eventually wind up a villain?

Not necessarily. The reincarnate will affect them somehow, but they don't have to wind up a criminal just because the Kingpin's in their head. On the opposite side of the spectrum, just because a character has Superman doesn't mean they'll wind up a heroic boyscout. It's possible to fight the reincarnate's influence. It depends greatly upon the personalities and the host/reincarnate dynamic.

The application asks for two objects and a location. Why?

Because whatever magic pulled the character into the real world has started pulling things and places through, too. You don't have to pick objects and locations, but each character is allowed them. Objects are held by the Agency until they're claimed by someone with a right to them. Locations... well. It's complicated. The Agency's still working on how they got into this world and how long they'll stay. There's security at each location in an attempt to keep the peace (and keep any violent creatures/criminals inside), but there's nothing to really keep reincarnates from visiting.

There's also the problem of how obvious the cities are - reincarnates have been a well-kept secret for most of their existence, but how do you hide Gotham? The cities are a very new development and the Agency's still formulating their game plan.

What's the Agency? How much power/influence do they have?

The Agency is as close to a governing body as the reincarnate community has. It's been around for centuries and is headquartered in London, although each major city tends to have a satellite office. The Agency has agreements with most world governments to operate quietly within their borders. This is done for expediency's sake: reincarnates know their own and the Agency's been doing this work for longer than some governments have been around. However, reincarnates remain citizens of the country of their birth and ultimately they answer to their home government. The Agency serves more as a management organization than a peacekeeping organization; it's part of why they were so helpless to intervene in the Reincarnate War. (For more on the war, scroll down.)

So, my reincarnate can be from anywhere in the world. How do reincarnates travel to see each other?

Why, through the MTN of course! MTN stands for the 'Magical Transportation Network', it's a system made up of a combination of technology and magic, there's one in every Agency building out there. The MTN is not the most pleasant way to travel (it tends to make you queasy) but it's certainly the fastest and is invaluable to Agency personnel and reincarnates alike, who frequently have to go halfway across the globe to deal with a crisis or just to hang out with their peeps. All reincarnates are allowed to use the MTNs for travel and it's proven to be much more convenient then public transportation when you have to get somewhere quickly.

How are the journals set up?

The Agency created them, since nowadays there are way too many reincarnates to simply throw giant parties and invite everyone. When a character is approached by a Caretaker and told about their reincarnate, they're also given information about creating a login. Whether or not they choose to be social is up to them.

As an FYI: journals do not have the character's real name associated with them, nor the character's reincarnate's name. However, any icons can be seen by other characters. So: when a journal post goes up, other characters have no way of knowing who posted it unless they're told by the poster, but the icons are considered IC. It's a lot like IJ that way; you can set a handle and no one is to know that it's not your real name, but everyone can see the images you upload.

So you mentioned a war, but I don't see anything about that anywhere. What's going on?

This game is a spinoff of a now-closed community called 'Our True Selves' ([info]ourtruemods). The main plot arc of that game was a war between 'good' reincarnates (Camelot) and 'bad' ones (CORE). CORE wanted, essentially, a reincarnate-run world government. Within the group there were also factions that just wanted to destroy things, or take power for themselves, or play out some personal vendetta against an enemy in Camelot. They were loosely organized under a leader, Anna Harkness, but the management structure was poor and eventually they fell to a Camelot attack. Camelot was led by the Morgan family, who had a long history of reincarnates in the family tree. Michael Morgan was assassinated before the final attack, so his deputy Betty Peabody led the group into battle.

That's really all you need to know - in terms of game plot, the war is pretty much in the past. The Agency is conducting investigations and the CORE prisoners will be tried for war crimes, but any new uprisings and conflicts will take place between new groups of allies.
